Dr. Cristi Frenţ, researcher at the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre, received the Best Paper Award at the fifth International Conference on Tourism (ICOT), held by the International Association for Tourism Policy (IATOUR) in London, June this year. The Best Paper Award in Tourism is given by the International Journal of Tourism Policy, honouring the author(s) of a paper of exceptional merit accepted and presented at the conference. The winner is chosen from nominations by members of the scientific committee. Dr. Frenţ’s paper was one of two papers awarded for Best Paper at the conference. These prestigious awards are a tremendous acknowledgement of the research and development of the Icelandic Tourism Satellite Accounts done by the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre in collaboration with Statistics Iceland.

Dr. Frenţ’s paper, “Expanding the Icelandic Tourism Satellite Account and its Possibilities of Using for Tourism Policy“, is based on a 2014 ITRC research report: “The Economic Benefits of Tourism in Iceland - New developments for the Icelandic Tourism Satellite Account: Tourism Gross Fixed Capital  Formation and Tourism Collective Consumption“, available on ITRC’s website. The report presents an approach for developing new aggregates for future TSA compilations in Iceland. The paper has been submitted to be published in the Current Issues in Tourism Journal.

TSA is an official statistical instrument to measure the economic contribution of tourism based on international standards. A compilation of the Icelandic Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) for the period 2009-2013 has already been produced and published by Statistics Iceland. This new compilation confirms the growth of Icelandic tourism and rigorously establishes the economic contribution of tourism to the Icelandic national economy.

The fifth ICOT-conference was held in London, June 24th-27th. The conference’s aim and scope was: “From Tourism Policy into Practice: Issues and challenges in engaging policy makers and end users”. Around 130 delegates from 40 countries took part in the conference.

The Icelandic Tourism Research Centre congratulates Dr. Frenţ’s on his prestigious award.
