About us

The Icelandic Tourism Research Centre (ITRC) is a collaborative initiative between the University of Iceland, the University of Akureyri and University of Iceland at Hólar. In addition to the three universities, The Icelandic Tourist Board and The Icelandic Travel Industry Association each appoint a representative to the centre's board.

Strategies and objectives
The ITRC's strategy is to strengthen research and understanding of the economic, social and environmental impacts of tourism. The Centre pursues this through collaboration with researchers and the tourism industry in Iceland and abroad, the publication of academic research, information dissemination and consultancy, as well as organising conferences and lectures.

The objectives of the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre are:
  • to promote and improve tourism research in Iceland
  • to ecourage cooperation between Icelandic higher education institutes in the field of tourism studies
  • to strengthen dialouge and collaboration with the tourism industry and other stakeholders
  • to encourage collaboration between researchers in Iceland abroad in the field of tourism studies
  • to publish academic work and disseminate tourism research findings
  • to organise conferences and lectures in tourism studies

Background and development

The origins of the ITRC date back to 1997, when a research position was established at the Icelandic Tourism Council's office in Akureyri. In 1999, the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri signed a cooperation agreement, leading to the establishment of Ferðamálasetur Íslands (Icelandic Tourism Centre) in 2000. The Centre adopted its present name, the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre, in 2008.
