ITRC initiated a collaboration between researchers within University of Iceland, University of Akureyri and Hólar University College, who have been engaged in research related to exploring the interlinkages between tourism, energy development, nature conservation and regional development.

The objective of the group is to work together on research projects that focus on tourism in Icelandic nature and examine the often competing goals of tourism and other sectors, tension between tourism and nature conservation and how these factors influence regional development.

The research group has already designed one research project where the emphasis is on tourism and national parks and is now searching for grants to finance this project. The group will also continue developing other opportunities for research collaboration in the field.

Dr. Auður H Ingólfsdóttir leads the network on behalf of ITRC (audur@unak.is).
