A new report on citizen science in whale-watching

A new report has recently been published that examines the collaboration between Icelandic whale-watching companies and cetacean researchers in the field of citizen science.

The findings highlight the educational and transformative potential of whale-watching as a platform for science communication and environmental stewardship. Researchers recognize the value of citizen science as a research method, and tourists show willingness to engage, demonstrating clear potential to further develop citizen science–focused tourism.

The research was funded by the University of Akureyri Science Fund and conducted by Ása Marta Sveinsdóttir, researcher at ITRC, and Gyde Rudolph, intern at ITRC.

Here you can read the full report.

In connection to the project a summary about tourists participation in science in Iceland has also been published (in Icelandic). See here.
