Intern at the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre

From February to May 2022, the ITRC will host Julie Madsen during the time of writing her master’s thesis. Julie is a master’s student in Sustainable Development in Tourism, Transnational Mobilities and Communities at Aalborg University, Denmark, and did an exchange semester at the University of Akureyri in the fall of 2021.

Julie’s research interests include the complexities and conceptualisations of sustainable tourism, developments in rural settings, tourism trends, and resilience building in times of crisis.

In her thesis work, Julie will concentrate on the perspectives of the local tourism actors from the Municipality of Akureyri. The main focus is their conceptualisations of sustainability and whether these interrelate with the future tourism scenarios anticipated by themselves. At the moment, ten in-person interviews have been completed. The qualitative data collection provides essential insights into how they expect to restart and restructure the local tourism framework.

The ITRC welcomes Julie to the team in Akureyri!
