New Project: Circular Solutions in Tourism – CIRCULATOUR
The Icelandic Tourism Research Centre (ITRC) is participating in a new project that explores circular solutions in tourism. The project is titled Circular, low-waste and resource-smart tourism for NPA communities – CIRCULATOUR and is funded by the European Union’s Interreg programme, Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA).
CIRCULATOUR is a collaborative project involving seven institutions and organizations across the NPA region. Its objective is to promote more sustainable tourism by developing and testing solutions that improve visitor management, reduce resource consumption, and help the tourism sector adapt to climate-related changes. During the project period, the aim is, among other things, to develop a visitor flow prediction model and circular smart destination maps. The results will be useful for authorities, destination management organizations, small and medium-sized enterprises, and tourists.
The project is led by Finland (South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences). In addition to Finland and Iceland (RMF), participants also come from Greenland, Sweden, and Ireland. The total project cost is €1.249 million, of which the Icelandic share is €183,000. The project duration is 30 months.
RMF representatives in CIRCULATOUR are Ása Marta Sveinsdóttir and Dr. Johannes Welling. The contact person for the project in Iceland is Guðrún Þóra Gunnarsdóttir, gudrunthora@unak.is. RMF’s partner in the project is the South Iceland Marketing Office.
