Tourism in Þeistareykir

In the summer of 2023, ITRC conducted a study of tourism at a geothermal site of Þeistareykir upon request from Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland. The aim of the study was two-fold: firstly, to collect data on the attitudes of certain user groups towards the geothermal site area now that the main power plant and road infrastructure constructions in the area have been completed, and secondly, to conduct traffic survey in the area.

The study was carried out in the spirit of ITRC's previous research in the area in 2008, 2012 and 2017. 

Data was collected in three ways: through traffic counting, interviews, and questionnaires. The project manager is Guðrún Þóra Gunnarsdóttir, the traffic survey is supervised by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson and other data collection by Sigríður Kristín Jónasdóttir, a summer employee at ITRC.
