Title: When Politics Changes Where Tourists Go: Lessons from East Asia for Small Destinations

Organisers: Juli S. Kim

Affiliation: Economic Officer – U.S. Mission to the EU

Description

Over the past decade, several East Asian destinations have discovered that international tourism flows can shift suddenly for reasons that have little to do with marketing, safety, or visitor experience—and everything to do with politics. This panel explores how diplomatic tensions have, at times, reshaped arrivals from China to South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, and what those episodes can teach smaller and more tourism-dependent destinations.
