Description
Screens play an important role in peoples´ lives and films, series, TV-shows, music videos etc influence destination selection. Not all productions evoke tourism flows but there are cases where destination is ruined or started to bloom because of the film´s popularity. Different impacts of film tourism have been identified by several authors researching topics related to film-induced tourism but collaboration between different parties (filmmakers, local community, tourists, DMO) could always be better and bringing different parties together thru research is crucial. Kim et al. (2019) note that film tourism is more sustainable because it does not require large investments to build special tourism attractions (the image-based familiarity is already there if filmmakers are not required to remove the sets). Or will the film props ruin the authenticity of the place? When producers or production companies select a location, local community does not have control over how their home is represented on screen (Beeton, 2016; Yoon, Kim, & Kim, 2015). Will this affect the artistic freedom if location stakeholders start dictating the content and storyline changes? Many angles to discuss the topic of film tourism and no better place than Iceland that has experienced many of the pros and cons of film-induced tourism.
In the era of rapid technological development let´s take a step back and evoke our creativity by the simple technique of drawing (and yes, everybody can draw). During the 45-minute workshop all the session participants will learn basics of graphic facilitation. The workshop is followed by 3 presentations (10 minutes each) on the topic of Tourism & the Moving Image that the audience can visualise using the new skills they just learned, and 15-minute discussion to conclude the governance, sustainability, and power issues in film tourism.
